Summary of the Suez Crisis
Erupted on July 26, 1956; the Egyptian president, Abdul Nasser nationlises the Suez Canal company as it was previously owned by the British and French.
If Nasser blocked the precious flow of the canal, he could cripple the British and French economy, as the crisis erupted in the mid of the 'Cold War'.
Britain and France were planning for a 'strike' in Egypt. Meanwhile, Nasser was running the canal as a business. The newly created State of Israel agreed to make a strike against Egypt.
The Suez crisis was one of the worst breaks in the U.S. and U.K. relations that had took place. As the situation deteriorates Pearson decides to send the world's first peacekeeping force but the fury and rage from Washington wouldn't let that happen.
Parson proposes a real UN force with no British and French forces. In the early hours of November 4th 1956, the General assembly supports Pearson's proposal for the peacekeeping forces.
Bowing down to international pressure and the arrival of UNEF, British and French forces complete their withdrawal in the end of 1956.
Pearson was praised at the UN for his brilliant efforts. Lester B. Pearson was awarded the 'Nobel Peace Prize'. He was elected as the Prime Minister of Canada.
